What is Yoga?

Yoga is the performance of a combination of  poses or postures, stretching,  breathing, meditation, and chanting. The body becomes relaxed and energized at the same time.

There are several styles of yoga, some move through the poses quickly, almost like an aerobic workout, while other styles are slow moving and are deeply relaxing.

Yoga Styles  

There are many yoga styles; this is just a few;

Hatha  Yoga ~ Slow paced and gentle gives you an introduction of the basic poses of yoga. 

Ashtanga  Yoga ~ fast moving, intense style of Yoga, which can be physically demanding.

Power Yoga ~ Fast paced like Ashtanga yoga, but does not stick to the exact sequence of the poses like Ashtanga

Iyengar Yoga ~ Uses props such as straps and blocks to help align the body into different poses. The poses are held for long periods of time concentrating on the correct alignment and form of the body.

Vinyasa Yoga ~ Fast paced intense stretching, with an emphasis on breathing.

Bikram Yoga  or Hot Yoga ~  practiced in a room heated to 105 degrees, with a humidity of around 40%.

If you're just starting out or have never done Yoga before, we recommend that you try a few different types of yoga to find out what you like best.  Nothing says you have to stay with one style, or you can combine styles.

Your individual experience with yoga is referred to as “your practice”. Your practice can be ever changing, but the poses will never change. You will gain strength and more flexibility as you continue your practice, so you can change as you grow.

Finding the yoga style you prefer will be well worth the time spent. Yoga is offered through many different facilities; health clubs, gyms, etc. If you practice yoga at a gym the focus is usually on the physical benefits of yoga, where as if you take yoga at a yoga center the focus could be more spiritual.

Just like any other form of exercise, if you are new to yoga, you will want to start with easy poses, then move on to the more difficult poses. Do not over do it, and stop if you feel pain. Yoga should be done daily at least 15 minutes of exercise and 15 minutes of breathing.

The reason why yoga succeeds while other fitness programs fall over their heads is because yoga leads to the simultaneous development of the body and mind creating a perfect harmony as you proceed. Bring yoga into your daily life and you’ll notice the difference.

There are many benefits gained through yoga, you will begin to feel much better physically and mentally. You will learn to relax alleviating the side effects of the prolonged exposure to stress. Doing yoga will leave you with a clear mind and you will fell more energetic.
